Product Sample Contents: Get the Version You Actually Need

Define product sample contents for your dropshipping request: the selected version, included pieces and packaging, with procurement handled by UTS.

A product sample should arrive as the version and set you agreed to receive. A listing photo can show several products, optional accessories and a styled package together, while the available sample consists of only one unit. Specify the sample contents before commissioning the purchase: the exact item, the pieces supplied with it and the packaging you need to see. That gives the request a useful result beyond simply receiving something that looks like the picture.

In dropshipping, the physical item may go straight to your photographer or local creator rather than pass through your hands. Request the product sample around what that recipient needs. UTS handles sourcing, supplier coordination and quality work within the service commissioned; you confirm the proposed result. Availability, customization and delivery arrangements still need agreement for the actual request.

Match the product sample to a specific version

The product link is a starting point, but it may contain several sizes, colors, pack quantities or configurations. Identify the combination you want, using the selected option names or a screenshot where helpful. Shopify’s explanation of product variants distinguishes each combination of option values, such as size and color. The same distinction matters when the physical item is being obtained for you; a familiar listing title does not identify every version beneath it.

A product sample from a range is not automatically a sample of the whole range. The illustrated collection contains four different containers; receiving one would not let you describe the others as received. If you need several versions, name them and the quantity of each. If you need only one, make that selection explicit rather than relying on a group image.

UTS can clarify the available version with the supplier and explain any difference from your request. An available alternative may be useful, but it should be presented as an alternative for you to accept, rather than silently replacing the chosen item. If the requested sample contents cannot be supplied together, decide whether the partial set still serves your purpose or whether the request should wait. A product sample obtained now also does not establish stock availability for future customer orders.

Included pieces are different from photo props

Sample contents need to distinguish the main item from pieces that belong to the purchased set. A stand, cable, lid, spare attachment or instruction leaflet may matter to the result you want. Their appearance in an image is a reason to clarify inclusion, not evidence that they will be supplied. UTS’s purchasing service includes verification of packaging and accessories with the supplier, so you can request that answer without conducting the supplier discussion yourself.

The headset photograph also contains a phone and part of a screen. Those separate objects illustrate a setting; they do not establish the contents of a headset purchase. Apply that distinction to your product sample request. If a creator needs a separate supporting item for a demonstration, identify it as a production need rather than assume it comes in the sample contents.

For example, a container photographed with a lid and cleaning tool could be sold alone, with the lid, or as a larger set. The useful answer is which of those arrangements the proposed product sample represents. Ask the proposal to name the included pieces and quantities, and to identify anything pictured that is excluded. If an essential piece is unavailable separately, the team should explain the available option; the seller decides whether that result is suitable.

This is also different from requesting a replacement for an existing customer order. Here, the question is the complete sample contents you intend to receive for a new request. You are not assigning a compatibility check to the person receiving the parcel or assuming that a visually similar accessory will work with the selected item. Supplier-side clarification and the agreed quality checks remain part of the commissioned work.

Decide whether the package is part of the result

A product sample can be requested as the item alone or as the complete presentation the recipient needs to see. For an unboxing video, the retail box, inserts and arrangement of the pieces may be part of the sample contents. For a close-up photograph of the item, the original presentation may be less important. Describe the intended result so the team can propose the appropriate scope, rather than treating every request as identical.

The closed box illustration shows why exterior appearance leaves a question unanswered: the package does not reveal the sample contents inside. Protective shipping packaging, a retail box and custom packaging are separate things to identify. If your own branded packaging is needed, discuss it explicitly; ordering a product sample does not automatically include printing or a finished branded set. Our article on a custom packaging proof explains the separate distinction between a design image and a physical package prepared for the actual product.

Opening and use can also change what the recipient receives. If the same item will be photographed in China and then forwarded for an unboxing elsewhere, tell the team which presentation must remain intact. A used or opened sample may meet one content need while failing another. Ask what condition can be supplied, including any packaging change, before agreeing to reuse it. Where the physical item should go is a separate choice covered in our guide to sample shipping or photography in China.

Send the desired result, then confirm the proposed scope

To discuss a product sample, send the product reference, selected version, quantity and the purpose of the request. Name the recipient and destination if delivery is needed. Include any essential accessories, retail presentation or unopened condition, and mark questions you want the team to resolve. You do not need to create a procurement procedure, supervise packing or learn how to inspect the goods.

Ask the proposed arrangement to identify the sample contents, any exclusions or alternatives, the receiving result and the services included. Purchasing an item, photographing it and sending it onward are distinct needs. You can commission only the relevant service; sample purchasing does not require a full fulfillment package. UTS’s purchasing service can discuss the supplier coordination and procurement scope, with project-specific charges and timing confirmed for your request. Once those details are clear, you can authorize the product sample that serves the purpose you described.
